Star of BBC’s online version of Dragons’ Den to meet award-winning students

PROMINENT Scottish businessman Shaf Rasul is to meet award-winning students from  New College Lanarkshire.

The star of BBC’s online version of Dragons’ Den will visit the Coatbridge Campus on Tuesday, February 17th.

The self-made multi-millionaire will meet students who participated in the WorldSkills UK trade skills contest and helped make New College Lanarkshire the ‘Best in the UK’ for a second year running, beating hundreds of students from across the UK in the process.

The College built on its table-topping success of 2013 by scooping four gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal at the competition held at the NEC in Birmingham in November 2014. Four students were also highly commended.

Born in Alloa and based in Edinburgh, Mr Rasul is the founder of storage media company E-Net Computers, which has a hub in Dubai and a £5million distribution centre at Edinburgh Airport. He also has a venture capital investment portfolio which focuses on property, asset management and internet technology.

He will be a guest at a lunch celebrating the WorldSkills UK accomplishments to be held at the College’s 101 Park Street conference venue.

Mr Rasul said: “As a champion of young people, I believe it’s important to develop and support our future generation, and I’m continually impressed by the hard work and determination of those studying at New College Lanarkshire.

“The eight students who were awarded medals at WorldSkills UK at the end of last year should be extremely proud of their achievement. It’s no easy task to compete against hundreds of other students and apprentices from across the UK, and their success demonstrates how much young talent we have in Scotland.

“I am very much looking forward to visiting the College, to congratulating the students in person, and learning more about the support and opportunities available.”

Martin McGuire, Principal at New College Lanarkshire, said: “We are delighted that Shaf Rasul is coming to meet with students whose achievements at WorldSkills UK were nothing short of incredible.

“As a College we foster very close links with prospective employers and this is a fantastic opportunity for students to be inspired by a leading Scottish businessman with exceptional entrepreneurial flair.”
